IRS/State Information
Make A Smile Foundation, Inc. provides events at various times during the year for children in need* to participate in shopping sprees where they select clothing or toys, and then enjoy a small party. These events take place at a local Target store that donates a meeting space for the event. At our Spring and Fall Shopping Sprees children are allowed to choose up to $60 in clothes. During the Holiday Party and Shopping Sprees the children are allowed to choose up to $45 in toys and games (these were the amounts for the past year and usually increase annually). When a child has chosen their clothes or toys and games (depending on the type of event), they go to the register with a volunteer who pays for the purchases and then gives any change to the child.
Before and after the children shop, the group gathers for a party where donuts, fruit, juice and milk are served. At the clothing events the children color and sing songs with the volunteers. At the event held in December each year, the children also receive gifts from Santa and have the opportunity to have their picture taken with Santa to take home with them.
The funds raised are used to purchase clothes, toys, provide funds for the shopping spree, and to fund the expansion of the charity’s programs.
*The children are identified as “in need” by school nurses or social workers who identify children on subsidized school lunch programs. We provide the invitations for the Shopping Spree to the nurses/social workers who then deliver them to the children directly.
